In Memoriam
Ian Nicol AM KSJ - Founding Partner
23 September 1953 - 26 December 2007
Ian Nicol was first admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory in 1979. He held degrees in Law and Arts from the Australia National University. He commenced his legal career at Barrads Solicitors in Canberra, becoming a Partner in 1980. In 1988 he moved to the firm, Blakes Dawson Waldron, initially as a Senior Associate and then as a partner from 1989 to 2001. In 2002, Ian opened the Canberra office of Norton White as managing partner and, in 2004, founded the "band of brothers" partnership of Williams Love & Nicol.
In many ways, Williams Love & Nicol was Ian's ideal law firm, born of his vast experience in the practice of law, his joy of the collegiate atmosphere he fostered and encouraged and his desire, as a senior practitioner, to mentor and nurture a new generation of lawyers and to instil in them his passion for justice and the drama of the courtroom.
Ian was a true philanthropist, committed to the local and national community. At the time of his death he was a board member of Focus Inc, a charity providing supported accommodation for people with intellectual disabilities and the Deputy Chair of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, a national body formed under the auspices of Charles Sturt University providing a place for ecumenical and inter-faith dialogue. He was also a board member of the Commonwealth Club.
Ian was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia in June 2002 for his services to people with physical disabilities and for the community through the Anglican Church of Australia. In March 2007, Ian was also appointed a Knight of the Order of St John for his community involvement.
Sadly, for the firm, his clients, his family, his friends and the wider community, Ian died as a result of a road accident on 26 December 2007.
"His humanity and generosity of spirit infused all that he did in law as it infused all that he did in life."
The Honourable Dr Ken Crispin QC, 4 January 2008
